01. supporting Ayacucho's local farmers

All year, every day! Our team of well-trained bio-engineers is on site to assist during sowing, harvesting and processing. They oversee the efficiency rate, find ways to optimize the agricultural process and assist the farmers in the certification process for organic production. Every farmer is visited at least 6 times per year.

02. training program for youngsters

We believe strongly in these kids, this next generation is our future. That’s why we make the commitment to support JOVEM, a agricultural program specially for young ambitious people in the Ayacuchen Andes.

The program turns them into successful agricultural entrepreneurs. The key to succes? Sustainability based on biological agriculture! During the training we discuss several topics, such as sustainable soil management, the avoidance of erosion, sustainable water use, sorting, recycling, compost use, environment friendly pest management, business management, personal development, ect.

By the end of 2021, more than 350 youngsters were trained in Jovem. Way to go!

We spend 25% (!) of our profits to our social projects.

03. climate neutral transport

We prevented 32.000 kg of CO2 emissions in 2021.

GoodShipping

Besides our sustainable co-operation with the quinoa farmers, we also want to contribute to a more sustainable ocean shipping.

Our contract with GoodShipping ensures that all Solid Food’s container ocean freight is climate neutral through the use of sustainable biofuels for container ships. See our certificate.

Our quinoa is transported from the port of Callao, Peru to Antwerp, Belgium on the basis of sustainable biofuel. As it concerns second generation biofuels, made from waste or residual flows, there is never any competition with food production. Indeed, there is no direct or indirect land use change and no deforestation or biodiversity loss.

How does it work?
Solid Food buys enough biofuel for the transport from Lima to Antwerp of more than 40 containers with quinoa per year. This biofuel is then sold to the shipping industry. In other words, the corresponding volume of fossil fuel is replaced with sustainable biofuel onboard a vessel that would have normally run completely on fossil fuels. Although we cannot guarantee that this biofuel will actually end up in the ship with our quinoa, we do send a clear signal to the ocean shipping industry: we want to ship our goods sustainably!

04. Business Social Compliance Initiative

The Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) offers companies a code of conduct that supports them in their efforts to establish an ethical supply chain.

The strong code of conduct has 11 principles: a socially responsible policy, freedom of association, working hours and overtime, non-discrimination, combating child labor and forced labour, special protection of young employees, payment of a minimum wage, facilities for a safe and healthy workplace, environmental protection and no precarious employment.

Since 2019, Solid Food has a BSCI-certificate to put sustainable trade at the heart of our business
